From Mark Gowman: It’s hard to believe it’s been almost a decade since I first started playing Irish music. I’ll always remember walking into that seisiun for the first time and hearing, “Who are you? What do you think you’re doing here? Well, try not to mess us up too bad! And have you ever heard of playing in tune???” All of that was before I took my instrument out. So when I moved to Rochester a year or two later, I was a bit nervous about joining another Irish music community… since I never really belonged to the first one.

As I entered a hotel room in Henrietta where thirty people were crowdedly playing, an accordion player approached me. Rather than chastise me for my intrusion, he invited me to join him and his two fiddler friends. They spent that entire seisiun with me, introducing me to people, offering to buy me drinks, and inviting me to start tunes from my repertoire since it differed from the sets they commonly played. Those men were Ted McGraw, Lynn Pilaroscia, and the late Sean Walker. I have often wondered whether I would still play Irish music—and whether Celtic Music Society would even exist—if not for the kindness of these three men.

It is in this spirit of community that we have invited some great friends and great musicians—ages 9 to 95—to join us on The Devils of Dublin, and we are honored to have them. Celtic Music Society continues to be a labor of love, and we hope you will enjoy listening to this album as much as we enjoy playing.

Wednesday, January 16, 2008: This is our first post on this page. We had originally intended to record in November; obviously we're way behind schedule. A week ago, we had a long talk, and the kids all decided to push forward for our original release date for the St. Patrick's holiday weekend.

So far, we've got the album cover set up, our playlist and arrangements done, our guests contacted, our CD production contracted, and the recording studio set up in what was the band office 3 days ago. Now all we have to do is record, and record, and record, mix it, master it, put the packaging together, etc. Oh, and raise the $700 we're short to produce the CD's.

We begin recording Sunday at noon.

Sunday, January 20. Today we had a great first full day of recording... I had hoped to get solid rhythm section tracks for 3 or 4 sets done, and we got 6½. The kids were very professional and we were able to work very efficiently; it helped that we got 98% set up during the last week and got the chance to practice in isolation and with headphones. Special thanks to resident sound guru Brian Regan! (Unfortunately, we missed the AFC Championship; of course, most of the kids wouldn't know it from the KFC Championship.)

We had some great playing from everybody, and as always, the first day of recording is a real eye-opener... those bits of music you've always just skated through are now laid bare for all to hear.

We will do individual overdubs and melody parts this week, and record as a group again next Sunday along with some of our guest musicians.

We are currently on schedule for release on our March 15.

Tuesday, January 22. Today we got a few vocal tracks laid down; more importantly, today we learned that we have access to some funds left over from SOAR, the now-defunct ER arts support group. This amount not only allows us to pay for the bare-bones design we were planning on, but will allow us to produce a full-color package with a 12-page booklet, as well as getting stickers, posters, t-shirts, and other promotional materials. Thanks so much to everyone who has worked hard these past few weeks to help us raise funds!

Monday, January 28. It always happens... if everything that could go right did go right last week, it only makes sense that everything that could go wrong this week did go wrong. Still, we had some great moments. We were visited by several of our guest musicians, including Cathy McGrath, Mitzie Collins, Ted McGraw, Marty O'Keefe, Lynn Pilaroscia, and Jayne Pomplas.

Unfortunately, we've started to have some serious problems with the recording system. It seemed for most of yesterday and today that we were sunk. Thanks to some excellent brainstorming from Brian Regan and some great work from ERSD IT's Bob Peritsky, it looks like we are back in business.

We now have nearly all "foundation tracks" recorded, and have more than half of our guest musicians recorded. Due to the short time we have, we've started to mix some tracks already!

Some great pics...

Sunday, February 3. Today we welcomed outstanding string players for Penfield High School, who recorded parts for Red is the Rose. They did some truly great playing and were professional in every way. Thanks again to all of you and to director Shana Stewart! Bodhran/spoons/bones player Steve Condon also stopped by and laid down his tracks for Morrison's/Butterfly.

We've also decided to go with a more striking album cover (see above); the previous design will go on the back of the insert booklet.

Friday, February 8. We made a hard decision yesterday... with eight days to go until our self-imposed deadline, it has become clear that we will have to make comprises on the quality of our final product to meet it. We are shooting for a new release date that will allow us to do good work, while taking into account school vacations, the spring musical, concerts, percussion competitions, etc...

Thanks to Cathy McGrath for coming out again today and finishing her set. It's going to be great!

Congrats to Rachel for becoming the first student to finish all recording!

Thursday, March 13. It's hard to believe it's been a month since I updated this! Things are really moving along now... We had a 3-week hiatus, as we were on February break and then had the school musical; a major concert that involved the entire music department; and the Drumline entering state competition. Except for vocals, we now have all recording about 98% done, and the mix is about 75% done. Click this link or the button at the top for The Drunken Piper (link removed.... you missed it!) featuring Jayne Pomplas! (Sorry about any distortion that may come through; I got a bit excited with the gain today.) Pic at the left is from a fun gig at Spot Coffee (mmmm...) on a dark and snowy night.

Friday, March 21. The great news is that, after a few hundred delays and headaches, we are wrapping up production of The Devils of Dublin in the next two weeks. Of the thirteen tracks, five are complete, six are in the final stages of mixing, and just two have any significant work left on them. Even better is that, after our St. Patrick's Day gigs, we can now afford to have the CD professionally mastered.

We have a new, tentative, but hopefully final RELEASE DATE: Saturday, May 10. More details are soon to come!

I don't have any updated audio today, but I'll be rotating some samples of completed tracks in the coming weeks. Check back soon!

Thursday, March 27. It's been an exciting week in CD production. We're now right down to the very end, and yesterday Eastman strings professor and fiddle guru John Fetter came over to record with us. We'd been missing two key tracks, O'Carolan's Farewell to Music and The Road to Lisdoonvarna, which are now complete. O'Carolan's Farewell is our current sneak peek; I haven't even put the best stuff up there yet!
Monday, March 31. Final mixes are complete for all but three tracks, and we are planning to send the disc to print at the end of this week. More info very soon to come on the album release party, ordering, etc.
Tuesday, April 8.

IT'S DONE!!!

After many long months, the day some of us thought would never arrive finally has... this morning I am shipping the album to New Jersey for mastering and duplication. Our release date is offical...

Saturday, May 10.
